Virginia Kelly Shores, 92, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 29, 2009 in North Carolina. She had lived with her daughter and son-in-law for the past 12 years. Prior to that time she lived in Charlottesville, VA.
Virginia worked as a nurse at Blue Ridge Sanatorium for over 30 years, most of that time as the Evening Nursing Supervisor of the hospital. She loved her job, co-workers and patients. The memories and friendships from those years remained very precious to her.
Born in Scott County, VA on February 23, 1917, to the late James Nathaniel Kelly and Pearl White Kelly, she was the oldest of five children.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her oldest grandson, Ray Wood; her brother, Hobart Glenn Kelly; sisters, Mary Freda Kelly and Jamie Kelly Franklin.
She is survived by her daughters, Jayne Shores Wells and her husband, Jack, of Cary, NC and Kelly Shores Bryant, of Charlottesville, VA; one brother, Eugene Newton Kelly, of Duffield, VA; nieces, Mary Kay Shores, of Duffield, VA, Patricia Ball, of Duffield, VA, Barbara Hass and her husband, Dennis, of Duffield, VA and Betty Fugate and her husband, Thomas, of Frankfurt, KY; nephew, William James (Bill) Franklin, Jr., of Duffield, VA; and several great nieces and nephews.
Virginia is also survived by five grandchildren, Avery Wood and his wife, Anastasia, of Charlottesville, VA, Cindy Hicks and her husband, Tommy, of Stanardsville, Brett Bryant and his wife, Laura, of Gordonsville, VA, Brian Wells, of La Crosse, WI, and Stuart Wells and his wife, Suzanne, of Fuquay-Varina, NC; and eight great-grandchildren, Patrick and Kelly Hicks, Desiree Bryant, Brittnee and Michael Herring, Brandon, Matthew and Gavin Wells.
Family and friends were the most important things in Virginia’s life. She will be greatly missed by those who loved her, and remembered for her generosity and kindness.
In keeping with her wishes, her body was cremated and will be interred at a later date in Glencoe Cemetery, Big Stone Gap, VA. A graveside memorial service will be held at that time.
