Marvin R. Godfrey, age 90, died Nov. 24, 2017 due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Marvin was born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina to Gilbert and Mattie Godfrey on Feb. 8, 1927. He was class president of Central High School and attended North Carolina State College (now University), earning Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Crop Science and Agronomy.
Marvin was a WWII and Korean War veteran, having served in the US Coast Guard – Merchant Marine 1945 to 1946 and the US Army and Army Reserve from 1950 to 1962, attaining the rank of captain.
Marvin worked for North Carolina Crop Improvement Association at NC State, and then for FCX, retiring as seed department manager.
He was a long-time member of Western Boulevard Presbyterian Church, serving as deacon and elder.
Marvin could grow, cook, build, and repair anything and always had a supply of fresh vegetables to give away. As with most other Depression-era farm kids, throughout his life he valued hard work, honesty, and frugality. He never met a stranger and always had a ready smile and joke to share.
Besides his parents, Marvin was predeceased by his sisters Alma Rosso, Hazel Procopio, and Katherine Godfrey, and his brothers Raymond, Carlton, and Roy Godfrey. He is survived by his children David Godfrey (Beth), Stuart Godfrey (Darby), and Susan Williams; grandchildren Mattie Godfrey, Katelyn Kilgore (George), Christa Seaman (Scott), Jonathan Williams (Jenn), Ashley Gress (Dalton), Jason Godfrey, Ryan Godfrey, and Mary Stuart Godfrey; great-grandchildren Connor Seaman and Emma Williams; and many special friends and neighbors including Grace Arrington and the Campbell family.
A memorial service will be held Saturday Dec. 2 at 10:00 AM at Williford Funeral Home, 201 E. Academy St. in Fuquay-Varina. Following the service there will be an informal visitation in the chapel or outside as weather permits.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the North Carolina Agricultural Foundation Inc., Attn: Marvin R. Godfrey Scholarship Endowment, NC State University, Campus Box 7474, Raleigh, NC 27695.
