Savonne Matthews Medlin passed away on July 29, 2015. She was born on January 8, 1923 in Kipling, NC, the daughter of Troy B. Matthews and Thetie (Big Ma) Senter Matthews.
Savonne graduated from LaFayette School and went on to Louisburg College then transferring to East Carolina to pursue her long time career as a Health and Physical Education teacher as well as girls’ basketball coach. She loved her students and had a way of motivating them to be the best in whatever activity they were participating in. She was a lover of most all sports especially golf.
Savonne was a life long member of the local Methodist Church (First United Methodist) and served the church in many capacities including singing in the choir for many years.
Savonne was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Winfred E. Medlin; brothers, Ray, Malcom, Troy and Leo Matthews; sisters, Maxie Matthews Lanier and Eunice Matthews Eason.
She is survived by her sons, W.E. (Becky) Medlin of Fuquay-Varina and Art (Denise) Medlin of Myrtle Beach, SC; grandchildren, Mark (Keri) Medlin, Robert Medlin, Dennis (Sheri) Medlin all of Fuquay-Varina, Heather (Jay) Burchfield of San Francisco California, Taylor (Jeffrey) Tyndall of Willow Spring, plus 10 great grandchildren, Jarrett, Jacob, Jackson, Kolby, Wyatt, Luke, Anna Grace and Austin Medlin, Kennedy and Reese Tyndall. In addition to these there are many loved nieces and nephews and sister-in-laws, Betty Medlin Dickens and Cornie Medlin.
A funeral service will be held at First United Methodist Church located at 402 N. Main St., Fuquay-Varina on Saturday, August 1 at 3:00 pm. Burial to follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation at the church one hour prior to the service.
